Sendha namak, also known as rock salt or Himalayan pink salt, is a type of salt that is primarily composed of sodium chloride along with various minerals and trace elements. It is harvested from ancient salt mines in the Himalayan region and is renowned for its distinctive pink color.
Unlike table salt, which undergoes extensive processing and contains additives like iodine, sendha namak is minimally processed and considered a more natural alternative. It is commonly used in Indian and Pakistani cuisine, especially during religious festivals and fasting periods when regular table salt is avoided.
